Sudden Cardiac Arrest claims nearly 10,000 young lives each year. On April 2, 2009, Zac Schrah collapsed during high school football practice in Plano due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a common cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people.

Now, Living for Zachary is dedicated to raising awareness of SCA in youth and saving lives through community education and awareness events, promoting youth heart screenings, awarding student scholarships and donating automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to youth-based organizations. One of the most important steps is screening, as these help detect heart abnormalities and the potential for SCA with 99 percent accuracy.

Walgreens partners with Living with Zachary to offer screenings that include an echocardiogram, EKG and blood pressure test - these screenings are performed by Frontera. Screenings will be held Aug. 4 through Aug. 8, Aug. 14 and Aug 18 at Walgreens on 1600 Preston Road, Plano.

The Walgreens at 500 East Stacy Road, Allen will offer screening Aug. 11-13 and Aug. 15. These screenings are available at the greatly reduced pric of $55. Participants must be between 12-22 years old.
