Celebrate USA 250 as Texas State Historian Dr. Richard McCaslin discusses how Spanish Coahuila y Tejas played a pivotal role in helping American patriots secure independence from Great Britian at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at 300 N. Allen Drive.

A former Texas State Historical Association professor of Texas history at the University of North Texas, McCaslin has written or edited twenty-two books, including Tullis Award-winner Tainted Breeze: The Great Hanging at Gainesville, Texas, October 1862 and Pulitzer nominee Lee in the Shadow of Washington.

Dr. McCaslin observes, Without the support of several nationsmost notably France, Spain, and the Netherlandsthe United States would never have won its independence from Great Britain. Gov. Bernardo de Gálvez of Spanish Louisiana, an officer with experience in and support from Texas, contributed to the patriot cause with a successful military campaign on the Gulf Coast that led the British to return Florida to Spain, reversing a territorial loss of twenty years earlier.

Experience the amazing diversity in wetland vegetation and wildlife while learning about the history and basics of wetland ecology. After a safety and canoeing introduction, spend about 40 minutes on a guided trail around the Heard wetlands, followed by free paddle time to explore on your own.

No experience is necessary for any of the paddle programs. All participants will be given an introduction to canoeing that includes basic strokes, boat safety, and flat water maneuvers. Minimum age: 7 years. All canoe & safety equipment provided.

Honor the American flag at the annual Allen Flag Day Celebration at 2 p.m. June 14, at the historic Allen Christian Church, 352 E. St. Mary Dr. Bryon Wiebold, former Mayor of Farmersville and recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal from the Presidential Service Center, will discuss his collaborations with Veteran Suicide Awareness and Prevention.

The band will feature music, old and new, with many popular and recognizable tunes dating from the 1940s to the 2000s. Selections will include: Harlem Nocturne, featuring Alto Sax soloist, John Roberts. Summertime, arraigned by and featuring Tenor Sax Soloist, Jim Wilson. Shadow of Your Smile, with Bob Burnham on Trombone. Stephanie Waterman and Alex Dumas are the featured trumpet soloists. Closing the program, Mark Roberts, Drum Soloist are featured on the famous and exciting Sing, Sing, Sing.

This year, communities across the nation are commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. As a part of the City of Allens celebration, Brad Billings will present a special talk exploring the life, legacy, and enduring influence of Benjamin Franklin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25 at the Allen Public Library. Not simply a Founding Father, Franklin was a man of extraordinary curiosity and endless ambition whose influence stretched across politics, science, publishing, diplomacy, and civic life. Franklin was a quintessential representative of the Enlightenment, often referred to as the Age of Reason.

The lecture will highlight Franklins numerous pursuits and accomplishments, including his work as a printer and publisher, one of the keenest political minds of the Revolutionary era, a celebrated Freemason, and a man with an insatiable curiosity that drove his experiments, inventions and scientific discoveries.

The presentation is intended to offer audiences a deeper understanding of the man behind the mythsone whose ideas about learning, citizenship, fraternity, and public virtue continue to resonate 250 years after the founding of the United States.

Brad S. Billings is a Past Grand Master of Masons in Texas and the current Grand Secretary.
