  Fort Meade\, Maryland. On the first day of the October 1973 Yom Kippur Wa
 r\, he had an epiphany: while he and his NSA colleagues knew of the planne
 d Arab attack against Israel days in advance\, he was astounded to learn t
 he front-line Israeli soldiers were caught by total surprise. \nGeneral El
 i Zeira was then head of Israeli Military Intelligence. In 2017\, General
  Zeira confided in Bruce that this false assessment resulted in Israel suf
 fering the loss of over 2\,600 soldiers\, most unnecessarily. General Dr.
  Yaakov Hisdai\, an investigator of the post-Yom Kippur War Agranat Commis
