SUMMARY:Meadows Museum Curator presents Spanish textiles
DESCRIPTION:Widely recognized for her large-scale and intricately designed
tapestries\, Teresa Lanceta was recently awarded the Spanish National Pri
ze for Fine Arts\, her country’s highest honor for visual artists.  With a
Ph.D. in art history\, Lanceta has drawn inspiration from Roman and Moroc
can weavers\, but there are also links to modern abstract art. \nLanceta t
raveled extensively throughout Spain and Morocco to study diverse weaving
traditions. She engages with the history of fabrics and domestic labor wh
ile also questioning the boundary between “art” and “craft.” \nCristina Al
drich\, curatorial fellow at the Meadows Museum\, will discuss Lanceta and
her works at 7:30 p.m. Thursday\, May 23 at the Allen Public Library.   T
he Meadows Museum in Dallas is currently featuring a selection of Lanceta’
 s weavings\, painted and sewn fabric\, and pencil drawings.  \nTwo works t
itled La Orden de la Banda (The Order of the Band) that are currently at t
he Meadows may remind many here of Navajo rugs\, except that Lanceta’s are
more boldly asymmetrical and brilliantly colored than most. \nComprising
only nine works\, two of them pencil-on-paper designs for others\, this i
s the Meadows’ first show devoted to a textile artist. It’s part of an ong
oing collaboration with Fundación ARCO\, a leading promoter of contemporar
y Spanish art. \nCristina Aldrich is the 2023-2024 Center for Spain in Ame
rica (CSA) Curatorial Fellow at the Meadows Museum in Dallas\, Texas. Her
research explores various aspects of Spanish art\, including collection h
istory\, materials and techniques in the Middle Ages\, and the nineteenth-
century reception of Islamic Spain (the subject of her forthcoming exhibit
ion). Her dissertation focuses on how polychrome wooden sculptures of the
Virgin and Child in Castile and Leon shaped both individual and communal
identity in lay and monastic contexts during the twelfth and thirteenth c
enturies.   \nCan’t be there in person? The program will be streamed live
on ACTV. Find viewing options at  Watch ACTV  or view online at  ACTV.org
