DESCRIPTION:During the Civil War\, Texans’ opinions about their state seced
 ing from the Union and joining the Confederacy led to deep divisions. This
  was especially true when Collin County voted against secession. \nSo when
  Texas seceded to join the Confederacy\, Francis Asbury Vaughan from Segui
 n\, Texas\, and eleven of his compatriots\, elected as a matter of conscie
 nce to fight on the side of the Union. \nVaughan maintained a detailed dia
 ry that documented his perilous journey across Texas\, into and through Me
 xico\, by boat to New Orleans\, then traveling to Fort Jackson to enlist i
 n the Union Army\, and his pursuits during the war. Departing on July 4\,
  1862\, and finally locating the Union Army on October 22\, 1862\, Vaughan
  spent the Civil War fighting in Company A\, Texas 1 st Cavalry Regiment.
  He was mustered out of the army as a captain in San Antonio on November 4
 \, 1865. \nWayne Stewart\, the great-great-grandson of Francis Asbury Vaug
 han and author of Generations of Texas\, Ten Generations of Texas Family H
