A major highway, lake and school are named after Sam Rayburn, a man whose legacy continues to evoke admiration and respect.  An effective congressional leader during the Great Depression, World War II and into the 1950s, Sam Rayburn served as Speaker of the House longer than anyone in U.S. history. 

Emma Trent and Stacie Flood will discuss the life and legacy of Speaker Sam Rayburn at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at the Allen Public Library. This free live event that will also be shared virtually at  allentx.swagit.com  

Among “Mr. Sam’s” contributions are assisting farmers during the Great Depression, offering crucial leadership during World War Two, launching the space program during the 1950s, and in 1957, shepherding the passage of the first Civil Rights Bill since the end of reconstruction.              

Emma Trent is program coordinator for the Sam Rayburn Museum. In addition to assisting with the general operations of the museum, she is responsible for the museum’s outreach programs.  Stacie Flood is assistant site manager for the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site.
