Savor the Karankawan (Kadla) music of Alex Strong Wind Perez at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 14 at the Allen Public Library.  In addition, blues and rock tunes will be performed in Karankawan style. Admission to the concert is free.

A multi-instrumentalist who composes most of his own tunes, Alex Strong Wind presents the enthralling music of the Karankawa (Kadla) tribe. Certain songs are performed with the gourd rattle or hand drum. Alex Strong Wind also plays the native flute, guitar, 4-string gourd guitar, harmonica, congos, djembe and more.

A linguist and cultural advisor to the Karankawan tribe, which, he observes, “carries a lot of responsibility and a necessary medicine in an ailing society.” When asked what it means to be a Karankawan, Strong Wind notes, “I attempt to serve as a good example of what it means to be a human being and bring my relatives back from the separation of our native ancestry, after having been removed from it for so long, which created generational traumas. Our grandparents were taught to be ashamed of their identity as indigenous people. But I am in service to correct that misteaching.”

The program will be streamed live on ACTV. Find viewing options at Watch ACTV or view online at ACTV.org or YouTube.com/AllenCityTV.
