FLAG DAY CELEBRATION Honor the American flag at the annual Allen Flag Day Celebration at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at the historic Allen Christian Church, 352 E. St. Mary Dr. Congressman Keith Self will be the keynote speaker. The congressman’s tours included Airborne Infantry Platoon Leader, Airborne Infantry Company Commander, Special Forces Detachment Commander and Special Forces Company Commander. He deployed to Grenada, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraqi Freedom. During his career, Keith received the Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, Special Forces Tab, and Joint Staff Badge.
Upon retiring from the Army, Lt. Col. Self was elected Collin County Judge in 2006.
The Allen Community Jazz Band will open with Bugle Calls and perform a medley of patriotic music, including America the Beautiful, American Patrol, and I’m Proud To Be An American. VFW 2195 will present and post the colors, and General Bernardo de Galvez Chapter DAR will feature a “Retirement of Colors.”
Old and tattered flags are being collected by Heritage Guild members for a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the conclusion of the program. Bring your deteriorated flags and properly dispose of them.
After the program, guests will be invited to the Depot to view the exhibits. Hours of operation of the Heritage Center are available on the Guild website at www.allenheritageguild.org.
