In lieu of our annual Sam Bass/Railroad History Day, the Allen Heritage Guild will conduct an outdoor family fun event — a Scavenger Hunt. Participants will register online and arrive in carloads at the Depot for instructions on the hunt. Using their GPS, they will find locations and receive small items to keep that remind them of places in Allen’s history.
Scavenger Hunt Tickets ($15 per car) Click here to purchase tickets https://allenheritage.org/fundraiser/
Donation funds will be used for the restoration of the newly arrived steam locomotive. Enjoy your journey!
The Houston and Texas Central Railroad came through Allen in 1874. Sam Bass and the gang committed the first train robbery in Texas here in Allen in 1878.
Sam Bass (July 21, 1851 ? July 21, 1878) was a 19th-century American Old West train robber and outlaw, who died as a result of wounds sustained in a gun battle with Texas Rangers. Notoriously, he was part of a gang that robbed a train of $60,000 (equivalent to $1.4 million in 2021).
