The Allen Community Band presents a midwinter concert 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 24, at the Allen Public Library Civic Auditorium, 300 N. Allen Dr. A free event, the doors open at 7:00 p.m.

A popular bumper sticker declares, “If you can read this, thank a teacher.”   This concert will afford an opportunity to express that gratitude.  Under the direction of Craig Logan, this Allen Community Band (ACB) event will honor area educators, past and present, at this concert.

Themes from “Movies and Musicals” that have been suggested by ACB members and area educators will be featured.  Selections include songs from the Star Wars series, various Hollywood hits, and of course Broadway musicals.

As part of honoring educators, Craig Logan will conduct the pasodoble “Gallito,” scored and edited for American Wind Band by Roy J. Weger.  Mr. Weger was director of the SMU Wind Ensemble while Mr. Logan was a student at SMU.

Performing “The Hounds of Spring” will help begin the transition from winter into spring, which is a musical setting of the poem of the same name by Algernon Charles Swinburne, first published in 1865. Reed set the poem to music as a commissioned work by the John L Forster Secondary School Symphonic Band and was premiered by that group on May 8, 1980.  The piece remains a standard in the Wind Band literature.

Established in 2013, the Allen Community Band consists of 72 members from Allen and surrounding communities. All have band experience and enjoy performing music on a regular basis.  ACB has an open instrumentation policy and all skill levels are invited to join.
