Two Allen teens were honored in the 17th Annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program showcasing outstanding acts of youth volunteerism.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is operated by Prudential Financial and is in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)
Nicholas Cobb, 15, of Allen, was named one of Texas' top 2012 youth volunteers. Cobb, a sophomore at Allen High School, was nominated by the school for his work with the homeless in his community. Cobb recently formed a nonprofit organization designed to purchase coats for homeless families, and has raised more than $20,000 in his efforts.
As a State Honoree, Nicholas will receive a $1,000 prize, an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., and a silver medallion.
In addition to the top honorees, ten Texas students were also recognized as Distinguished Finalists.
Zoe Albert, 17, of Allen, was named a Distinguished Finalist by the program. Albert, a junior at Allen High School, is the founder of "Faux Paws," a program in which Albert creates and sells faux fur flip-flops. Albert has raised more than $16,000 to be donated to animal advocacy groups. In addition, she has partnered with a local daycare center to provide 114 pairs of Faux Paws for its homeless young residents.
As a Distinguished Finalist, Albert will receive an engraved bronze medallion.
