Upcoming Electronics Recycling Event at Allen City Hall on March 9

According to the EPA, consumer electronics represents between one and two percent of the municipal solid waste going to the landfill.

Did you know that recycling even a million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 US homes in a year? Additionally, for every million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.

On Saturday, March 9, in the Allen City Hall parking lot from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or until trucks are full), Allen residents will have the opportunity to drop-off office-related electronics and small electric appliances to be recycled. Accepted items include computers, monitors, printers, ink cartridges, scanners, fax machines, answering machines, phones, cell phones, microwaves, toasters, toaster ovens, mixers, and other small electric kitchen appliances (without Freon). No televisions will be accepted at this event.

Participants must show driver’s license and current water utility bill to prove Allen residency. This event is sponsored by the City of Allen and Keep Allen Beautiful in partnership with Cyclone Aluminum and Steel, Inc. Cyclone provides electronics recycling at many annual Allen events, including the annual Recycles Day in November and the Great American Cleanup held every April. The company consistently recycles almost 97% of collected materials. Cyclone removes all metals and recyclable materials, leaving very little waste that must be sent to the landfill.

The City plans to hold three residential computer and electronics collections this year. The next computer recycling opportunity is set for April 27, during the Great American Cleanup. Businesses wishing to recycle their electronics should contact Cyclone directly at 817-221-9941 to make arrangements outside of these residential collections.
