The Great American Cleanup in Allen, set for Saturday, April April 27, includes a new youth beautification effort this year as over 600 youth and adult volunteers paint approximately 1,500 fire hydrants in the City of Allen.

This expands the annual event that traditionally includes about 2,000 volunteers that conduct beautification and cleanup projects throughout the city. In addition, approximately 30 tons of disposal/donated items are collected at the event each year.

A schedule of events for the Great American Cleanup is as follows:

8 a.m. — Volunteer rally at Allen High School Track and Field Stadium (300 Rivercrest Boulevard) with opening comments by Mayor Pro Tem Gary Caplinger. Following the rally, volunteers will disperse in groups to begin painting fire hydrants per assigned and mapped quadrants of the city.

8 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Collection sites open at two locations (see flyer). Civic and non-profit organizations set up for donation of reuse items at the Bossy Boots and Watters Road location.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Medication Disposal at the Allen City Hall (305 Century Parkway). Alternate collection site at the Lowery Freshman Center (601 E. Main St.)

About the Great American Cleanup in Allen:

The City of Allen and Keep Allen Beautiful received the 2012 Keep Texas Beautiful Governor's
Community Achievement Award which recognized the Allen community as a state leader working diligently to create and sustain comprehensive environmental and beautification programs.

The annual Great American Cleanup is one of many events and programs hosted in the community each year. Residents participate in a significant way in this annual event with more than 30 tons of items being dropped off at the collection sites. Various non-profit organizations receive donations for reusable items and volunteer groups for programs like Adopt-A-Highway use this event for cleanup efforts!

The addition of the Paint the Town effort has involved support and organization through the Allen
Ministerial Alliance churches and a designated youth volunteer committee. Businesses such as Sherwin
Williams, Home Depot and Lowe's have provided paint and supplies.
