Our newest post is "Mist Covered Mountain." It's a Scot's lullaby, and though the melody is a variant of an older one, "Johnny, So Long at the Fair," the author (in the mid 1800s) generated a powerful version that inspires the feeling of grandeur of a mountain and for those who live in its presence. Earnie Taft and I put this one together where Earnie starts the tune off with his fiddle, and I join in with my Kerry Mezzo C whistle, Irish-tuned Bouzouki, and a stomp (drum) board.

Just started filling in a new website as a collection resource of my free KelticDead Music video and downloadable PDF story Broadsides. Pretty excited about the story Broadsides, as these offer an in-depth overview of the folk music selections, as well as viewing and hearing the sheet music arrangements that I offer. Still all free and can be heard and viewed on your computers and smart phones. The concept of the KelticDead Music initiative is now being shared with both national and international Folk music magazines. Visit my link page in my website to see the growing collaborative efforts with the U.K. based Simply Folk Music Magazine. As with all the selections, there are no hidden membership requirements and if you have a computer and internet service the video projects and PDF stories are all free. The Carter Family first recorded this Old Timey-Rural ballad in 1927. It was one of many Americana tunes out of the 1800s about those folk who went to sea to fight in the battles against the British in the wars of 1812. Our mission with the KelticDead Music projects is to find and play Folk, Celtic, Americana, Country, and Seafaring tunes and songs with acoustic instruments.

"Ballad of Impossible Tasks"

The KelticDead Music initiative is a FREE, on-line, music-education resource for those who are interested in music played in traditional Folk, Celtic, Old-Time, and Sea-Faring styles with live, acoustic folk-music instruments like guitars, whistles, bouzoukis, and others. The mission of the KDM is to provide a resource for those who can enjoy how these old tunes and songs were(are) played, but also provide a resource for those who might want to play along using their own instruments from the comfort of their own home. A new thrust by the KDM is to also provide, on-line, page-turning stories about the selections that are formatted to be viewed from computers or upon smartphones. My KDM story broadsides can also be found within a collaborative on-line magazine out of Europe. Check out SIMPLY FOLK MUSIC MAGAZINE on Facebook.

The latest project is one that most people know from Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Faire" (1966). However, this ballad was actually far older than that and the melody first appeared in 1891 by a collection from Frank Kidson. There is some confusion (and contention) as to who actually composed this melody which was dedicated to the 6th Viscount Mayo, Theobold Bourke, 1681-1741, in the 1st generation of Viscounts of Mayo which started from the first Lord of Ireland (Tiaboid naLong Bourke, 1567 1629). English titles can be confusing.

In Captain Francis ONeills compendium of Irish dance tunes (Irish Minstrels and Musicians, 1913), he gave credit to two authors of the tune; David Murphy (Dáithi Ó Murchadha of Castlebar, County Mayo), a harper whose patron was Lord Mayo, Theobald Bourke, 16811741. (David was a contemporary of Turlough OCarolan, and David is credited with the march version of the melody), and Thady O Cianain (in the same period of time) who may have had a similar arrangement as a slow(er) aire to which was called the The Arrival of Fionna. Other variants can be found like "Lord Franklin."

There's a little back story about David Murphy in the KDM Broadside. While I mentioned that David was a harper and conceited, when he got into a brawl with Turlough OCarolan about their respective talents, the actual story was that Turlough was so angry with David's impudence that he dragged David out of the pub by his hair. Needless to say, this scene did not sit well with David's patron, Lord Mayo.

The Ballad of Impossible Tasks was collected by Francis J. Child in the 1800s from the 1600s.
The melody was made popular in 1966 by Simon and Garfunkel.
The story is about a girl who is approached by a "cavalier" or "knight" who makes a rude proposition.
She rebukes the man in a very creative way.
