Local quilter Betty Mathews will discuss the history of quilts and display her own handiwork at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Allen Public Library.

After the crusades of the Middle Ages, the returning European soldiers returned from the Middle East with quilted vests. These inspired the creation of quilted blankets, a craft that spread across the continent. Soon, these became household necessities and were later carried by the colonists emigrating to the Americas.

Among the patterns that will be featured this evening will be the log cabin, tumbler, bears paw, star, and maple leaf, as well as samplers.

Her on point ocean waves quilt, a community effort, will also be on display. Originally pieced by Mary Alice Southard Bruce in the 1940s, a family member of Bettys. Sadly, she died before completing it. The piecing was finished in the 1950s by another family member, Bernard Bruce. It was then hand quilted by members of the First United Methodist Church in Fenton, Missouri. An example of Betty Matthewss original work is the Pin Wheel Pattern, crafted around 1990. For this she utilized what is known as the Stack and Whack technique, creating interesting designs.

Prior to retiring, Betty taught sixth grade for four new Allen Independent School District schools as well as serve as Ford Middle Schools librarian.

In addition to sewing dresses for a mission in Honduras, Betty is a member of the Scarlett OHatters and Allen Retired Teachers Association. She also assists with the distribution of 11,000 Christmas stockings to American military members around the world, packs boxes full of snacks and goodies in May for troops and sews Quilts of Valor for military veterans.

The St. Jude Career Alliance is offering its comprehensive, faith-based job search workshop on Saturday, October 17, 8:45 AM to 3:00 PM, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1515 North Greenville Avenue in Allen, TX 75002. Titled Empowering Your Career Journey, One Step at a Time, this workshop reflects the post-Pandemic changes in the job search market as well as feedback from Career Alliance workshop attendees over the past two years.

The Empowering Your Career Journey, One Step at a Time workshop will integrate interactive exercises such as S.T.A.R (Situation. Task. Action. Result.) stories, targeting specific companies, and crafting a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) to enable attendees to differentiate themselves from competitors. Attendees are encouraged to network during breaks and practice skills learned during the sessions.

This workshop is ideal for:

People who are unemployed and want an effective job search process.
People who want to get back into the job market after an extended career break.
People who are looking to do a career shift but are not sure just where to begin.
People who are recent graduates and looking to land their first job.

Parties interested in participating in this job search workshop will need to register online and pay a $25 fee. The fee will cover the cost of a full-color, spiral-bound copy of the presentation, as well as lunch, drinks, and snacks. Out of Her causeless kindness, the divine Mother takes many forms that represent her many moods, to grace us in a multitude of ways. Navaratri is a time when all of Her divine forms are celebrated with devotion and exuberance!
