Public relations icon and esteemed member of the late Lady Bird Johnsons brain trust, Martha Tiller will share stories of her fascinating life at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 27, at the Allen Public Library. A longtime witness and participant to history, Tiller was a staff assistant on an Emmy Award winning program for CBS Television in New York City and later Asst. to the Producer of the popular TV show PASSWORD with Goodson-Todman Productions. Returning to Texas, she worked for Texas governor John Connally and served as Communication Director for the Texas Fine Arts Commission in Austin from 1967 to 1969. Later, she was the press and social secretary to Lady Bird Johnson, assisting in her efforts beautify Austins Town Lake (now Lady Bird Lake) and protect wildflowers along Texas Highways. Prior to this she was Executive Assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson.

In 1976, Martha moved to Dallas where she started her own firm, Martha Tiller Public Relations. Tiller not only appeared in two episodes of the popular television series Dallas, she also convinced the shows producers to feature Dallas elites as extras. In 1993, she escorted Anthony Kennedy Shriver to the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas, where he was the first member of the Kennedy family to visit this iconic institution.

9/11/2026 7:30 PM (CST) Musical Tribute for 9/11

The Allen Community Band honors the 25^th anniversary of the 9-11 attack on our nation with a musical tribute with a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 11, at the Allen Public Library, 300 N. Allen Dr. The program will offer a combination of patriotic selections and pieces written specifically for the September 11 remembrance. In addition, the award-winning San Antonio Express journalist William Luther, who was in New York City to cover the tragedy, will share his recollections.

Some of the notable musical selections for this day include a version of Taps arranged by band member Derek Molacek and performed by trumpet soloist Kevin Purcell, the official Department of Defense version of The Star-Spangled Banner performed by all U.S. military bands, and songs composed as tributes to victims of September 11^th.

The latter tunes include A Hymn for the Lost and the Living by Eric Ewazen and Voices Echo, a two-piece movement by Benjamin Boone. The former, featuring trumpet soloist Stephanie Waterman, is a highly expressive work for wind ensembles that opens with a moving trumpet solo and builds into a profound memorial. The latter is a two-movement piece that begins with the aggressive and asymmetrical Attack, followed by Aftermath that provides a somber, reflective space.

Another highlight of the bands performance will be Carmen Dragons highly emotional arrangement of America the Beautiful. One of the most dramatic versions of this patriotic standard ever written, it opens with the full ensemble followed by an extended section featuring the woodwinds, with brass and percussion added to build to an exciting and dynamic ending.

Library presents Mariachi Michoacan-Creating an atmosphere to stir the passions, the hugely popular ensemble Mariachi Michoacan performs a free concert at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 13, at the Allen Public Library. Since 1986, Mariachi Michoacan has made a major impact on the North Texas music scene, performing across North Texas. For their Allen Library debut, Mariachi Michoacan will perform arrangements from across different regions of the Southwest and Mexico. Hispanic and non-Hispanic fans embrace mariachi music as the happy music of the world. The nostalgia and history expressed through the mariachi tunes bring delight and pride to all listeners. Today, it is enjoyed across the world and by countless ethnicities.
