The cities of Dallas and Plano recently reported having an outbreak of distemper in raccoons. The City of Allen Animal Control Division is also seeing signs of the epidemic with a total of 12 sick raccoons being picked up in the last month.

Residents are reminded not to pick up or handle any wildlife but to call Animal Control at 214-509-4378 to report the problem. Because distemper is very contagious and expensive to treat, pet owners should ensure that pets are up to date on vaccinations and city registration. Pet food should not be left outside and garbage bins should be secured with lids closed.
