Gary Schmidt, author of the Newbery Honor Award winner The Wednesday Wars, will speak at the Allen Public Library at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19. The Wednesday Wars is this year’s ALLen Reads selection.
As Holling, the Young Adult novel’s protagonist declares, “It is surprising how much good stuff there was. A storm, attempted murders, witches, wizards, invisible spirits, revolutions, characters drinking until they’re dead drunk, an angry monster. I figured that she hadn’t read it herself, otherwise she would never have let me at it.”
Holling is not referring to the Harry Potter series or Ann Rice novels but to the plays by William Shakespeare. And while the Shakespearean plays, the Viet Nam war, and emotional struggles are a part of the multilayered subplots of the book, empowerment and healing are the endearing themes in this novel.
A professor of English, Schmidt also enjoys teaching writing courses in prisons and detention centers.
Books will be available for purchase and autographing at the program.
Can’t be there in person? The program will also be streamed live on ACTV. Find viewing options at Watch ACTV or view online at ACTV.org or YouTube.com/AllenCityTV
